In the process I mentioned above for my family member I had to prepare some additional photos from her camera roll (long story and not relevant here) and I found that Image Capture sometimes choked on a large batch (say, over 200 items). I'd advise doing this in small batches at first. From here, you can click the screenshot button in the Game bar or use the default keyboard shortcut Windows key + Alt + PrtScn to.

Then click on Download and they will copy across. Once enabled, hit the Windows key + G key to call up the Game bar. Down the bottom of the Image Capture window you will see a destination selector which says Import to: and from here you can select your external drive in the usual way. Screenshot provides a panel of tools that let you easily take screenshots and screen recordings, with options to control what you capturefor example, you can set a timer delay or include the pointer or clicks. From left to right there are five capture options: Capture a screenshot of an entire screen. If you have a MacBook with a Touch Bar, these controls are also replicated there. I've found this step a bit fussy and then had to disconnect the phone and then reconnect. You can take pictures (called screenshots) or recordings of the screen on your Mac using Screenshot or keyboard shortcuts. Bringing up the capture tool is easy, simply hold Shift+Command+5 and it will appear on the bottom of your primary display. You'll probably have to accept the phone as a trusted device. However, for Image Capture, open the app on your Mac and connect your iPhone. One other thing with iCloud photos - you can choose to optimise the photos on a device and it will drastically reduce the space taken - to only a couple GB. You should also have two backup copies if you are keeping them locally. That would be better if you don't wish to have them on your devices - but be warned, a copy on one drive only is as good as not having them at all.
